Dem englischen Komponisten Andrew Lloyd Webber (1948) gelang in den letzten fünf Jahrzehnten ein Welterfolg nach dem anderen. Dem umstrittenen Musical und Film Jesus Christ Superstar (1971) folgten Evita (1976), Cats (1981), Song and Dance (1982), eine Kombination aus Variations und Tell me on a Sunday, Starlight Express (1984) und Requiem (1985). Sein Phantom of the Opera wurde 1986 mit Sarah Brightman (Lloyd Webbers ehemaliger Frau) und Michael Crawford uraufgeführt. Das Musical gewann sowohl den Laurence Olivier Award als auch den Evening Standard Drama Award für das beste Musical des Jahres 1986.
