The instrumentation of the TROIKA FANTASY has a distinctive feature, in that each part only uses 6 different notes. This choice of range was made especially for beginners and young bands.
In programmatic terms, the TROIKA FANTASY tells a short tale about Russia. This huge land is the home of the famous Volga, a river which appears in many sagas, fairytales and stories of adventure. One of these stories tells of the strong men who transported wood for thousands of kilometres along the river in their great boats. Many songs were sung on the way, a particularly well-known one being the “Song of the Volga Boatmen”. The TROIKA FANTASY begins in the bass group with this very theme. Later, the men drive into a village in a cart drawn by three horses, a combination known as a “troika” in Russian. In the village a celebration is under way, during which the villagers dance a “trepak”. The music in the TROIKA FANTASY becomes faster and faster, and the colourful piece ends with a shout of “TROI-KA!”
