Scott Joplin was born in Texarkana, Texas in 1868. In 1899 he suddenly became known as the "King of Ragtime Writers" with his "Maple Leaf Rag". In the first years of the 20th century he wrote a large number of ragtimes, which brought him fame and a certain wealth. "The Entertainer", originally for piano solo, was published in 1902 and is probably Scott Joplin's best-known ragtime. In a version adapted for a jazz band, it was also used as film music in "The Sting" (1973). In the final years of his life, Joplin increasingly turned to larger musical forms. He could not get over the failure of his opera "Treemonisha" (1915) and died in 1917 in the Manhattan State Hospital in New York.
