from Suite No. 4 in d (HWV 437)
The saraband is a slow dance of Spanish origin, which is to be danced in a stately and graceful manner. Who thinks the spirited Spaniards to simply go for fast music and the flamenco, should not forget that they are also very proud people. This become evident when a saraband is performed: a graceful and upright attitude is being adopted. Nobody laughs and between the motions of the dance, everybody remains in a static way, full of silent tension. During the 17th and 18th centuries it was very popular composing suites that comprised different dances. Famous composers such as Johann Sebastian Bach and also George Frederick Handel wrote many such pieces. The following SARABANDA is an excerpt of Suite No. 4 in D-minor, HWV 437, for harpsichord. The arrangement by Alfred Bösendorfer was especially written for youth wind band.
