Impression for Concert Band “Blue Hole” describes the myth of a spectacular dive area off the coast of the Central American state Belize. According to tales of divers there is a magical underwater world with dripstone caves, which once have been flooded by rising sea levels. The extensive cavern system leaves many questions unanswered, making oceanographers wonder about their origin. For divers, the big blue hole is intriguing not just because of its diversity of corals and fish species – occasionally divers are lost in the “Great Blue Hole”. The composition “Blue Hole” symbolizes different aspects of this natural phenomenon and its fascination – the mysterious attraction, the lurking danger of the adventure and of course the breathtaking beauty of the natural spectacle. Thomas Asanger set all this into music in this sweeping piece.
The young Austrian composer was born in Linz, in 1988. After his service with the Military Band of Upper Austria he began his music studies at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna, majoring in bassoon. His greatest successes to date have been composition awards and premieres in the Brucknerhaus Linz, the famous Viennese Concert Hall, and at the Midwest Clinic in Chicago.
