Cartoon, written in 1991, is one of the most brilliant original concert band works of recent years. Although it claims only to be perfect musical entertainment, the utmost is demanded of all sections of the orchestra. Paul Hart makes the effect an end in itself here; In the percussion alone, 24 different instruments are used in addition to the timpani. All the ingredients of the "classic" cartoon are musically present:
The grand opening, the exciting cat and mouse hunt, the strutting braggart, the soulful romance and of course the finale. All of this takes place in the mind of the listener. Certainly different than on the cinema screen or on the television screen, where functional music, despite its stark contrasts, is hardly noticed.
