Info

Georg Karl Lohmann was born in Magdeburg on February 23, 1899. He was a student of the renowned trombone virtuoso Paul Weschke who was active in and around Berlin. He went to World War I as a volunteer at the age of 17. After his war service he served as a musician in the military band of the Sicherheitswehr Gruppe Mitte from 1920 and in several swing orchestras in Berlin from 1921. In 1924, he was musician on the steamboat RUGIA and travelled 10 weeks from Hamburg to West India and back. He played in the Radio Symphony Orchestra Berlin from 1930 until 1940. During World War II, he was in Denmark and Belgium, before he served for the troop entertaining, where he stayed until the end of the war.  After the war, back in Berlin, he continued to play in the Radio Symphony Orchestra Berlin, and after the erection of the “wall” in the RIAS Pops Orchestra. Lohmann composed a number of solo pieces for his instrument which he also had published in due course. The “Bayerische Polka” (“Bavarian Polka”) turned out to be the most popular of these miniatures which basically were meant for “encores”. The soloist is required to play a perfect staccato here and the glissando parts of the trio section made it a trademark of light music for the slide trombone.
