Als erster amerikanischer Rockstar ging Billy Joel 1987 auf Tournee in der damaligen Sowjetunion. Diese sechsteilige Konzertreihe, die das Live-Album Концерт hervorbrachte, inspirierte ihn auch zum Titel Leningrad. Für das dazugehörige Album Storm Front (1989) trat erstmals Foreigner-Gitarrist Mick Jones an die Stelle von Produzent Ramone.
