Ouvertüre - Overture The overture „King David“ draws musical pictures of the great King of Israel, based on excerpts from the first and second Book of Samuel in the Holy Bible. The first part describes David’s predecessor King Saul, who has fallen from God’s grace due to misconduct. God sends the prophet Samuel searching for a new king, as presented in the second part. Samuel finally finds the new King of Israel in Bethlehem. It is David, the youngest son from the house of Isai. The third part tells of the dramatic fight between David, who is also King Saul’s armor-bearer at the court, and the giant Goliath from the army of the Philistines. In the fourth part, we hear how David is anointed King of Israel, while the fifth part describes the stone tablets of the Ten Commandments entering of the Ark of the Covenant. A short Coda leads the overture “King David” to a festive conclusion.
