Böhmischer Galopp · Galop Bohémien
The musical gallop is a fast folk dance in 2/4 time that enjoyed great popularity in the ballrooms of the early and mid 19th century. The dance was either a sidewise galloping or a fast circular dance with the step sequence of a polka. Alfred Bösendorfer is famous for his exacting knowledge of musical forms and his ability to lend to them his distinctive hallmarks in his compositions. His “Bohemian Gallop” is inspired by the flair of magnificent ballrooms and the exuberant mood of great dance events, where the gallop mostly served as the last dance. With an effective alternation between filigree and vigorous passages, Bösendorfer creates a partly noble and partly boisterous atmosphere. He also integrates soft melodic lines, typical for Bohemian music. After a short retard, the music accelerates with march-like sentiment. Alfred Bösendorfer created an entertaining piece of music that will delight the audience with a humorous wink and playful character.
