In 1880 Grieg published his Opus 33. It consisted of twelve settings of poems by the Norwegian A.O.Vinje. The following year Grieg gave the music of two of these songs a wider circulation by arranging them for string orchestra (Opus 34) and naming them 'Two Elegiac Melodies'. This version is the basis for the editing by Stefan Hippe.

Musical note:
The basis for Stefan Hippe's arrangement for accordion orchestra is Edvard Grieg's version for string orchestra. The articulation usual for strings has been retained. In the accordion orchestra score, for example, we find the upstroke (v) and downstroke (┌┐) slash indications. The upstroke is realized through a particularly delicate and soft tone approach. The downstroke should be performed as an accent with a previous bellows change. In principle, legato slurs are to be regarded as line slurs, i.e. the end of the legato should not be separated but rather tied through in favor of a larger phrase.
