Hellmut Haase-Altendorf was born on 17th December, 1912 in Chemnitz-Altendorf.
At the age of only 6 years he already had privat piano lessons. Against his father's will he studied at the Academy of fine arts in Munic, composition under Roderich von Mojsisovics, conductiong under Siegmund von Hausegger and Theodor Huber-Andernach and piano under Josef Pembaur jun. 1938 he graduated as Kapellmeister.
His first employment began in the same year, as second conductor at the theater in Ingolstadt. During that time he wrote several pieces, mainly music for theater and ballett. The Great War interrupted his promising carreer as theater conductor. Haase-Altendorf did his military service in Kempten. After the War, he was hired as musical director of a travelling theater. After a short stop in Reutlingen-Tübingen, he was empoyed as director and répétiteur at the state theater in Stuttgart. Simultaneously he became conductor of the musicipal band Feuerbach in 1951 and from 1957 until 1961 he led the musnicipal band Weil der Stadt. In 1961 he succeeded Hans Felix Husadel in the office of musicipal music director in Ravensburg, where he led the symphony orchestra and was responsible for the education of wind players. He was also very active in amateur music. From 1968 to 1986 he was federal music director in the Association of German folk music and in the National Union of German Wind and Folk Music Associations.
He received several awards for his compositions.
Hellmut Haase-Altendorf died on 14th January, 1990 in Burladingen.
