Mary's Boy Child
A Christmas Calypso
„Mary’s Boy Child” tells the Christmas tale. It is a newish Christmas song but yet in America it is already quite traditional. Several famous singers and bands have performed and recorded “Mary’s Boy Child”. Harry Belafonte was first, later Boney M, Nat King Cole, John Denver and many others. “Mary’s Boy Child” is written in calypso style, which developed in the 20th century on the West Indies, mainly Trinidad and Tobago. Similar to the American spirituals calypso was the chant of African slaves, who used it to communicate, to lament their fate and to give each other hope. Calypso mostly kept its political, often satirical message, which is intensified by the swinging Caribbean rhythm.

"Basic Sound" is a series by RUNDEL Music Publications offering an attractive and diversified repertoire to bands at grade 2 or 3 level, of sizes S to XXL. "Basic Sound" allows for performances by groups with limited instrumentation. Minimun requirements are clearly bracketed in the score.
The smallest size (S) of "Basic Sound" is based on the following instruments:
