The Italian-born Rino Bernardi offers a prime example of successful social integration. In 1978 he opened his ice cream parlor in Ochsenhausen (Biberach district), which has now been considered a gastronomic institution in this city for decades. In addition, Bernardi is fully integrated into the community, including as a generous supporter of sport, and is often characterized by locals as “more Swabian than many Swabians”. The march “La passione del gelato” (in English: “The passion for ice cream”) makes Italian-Swabian integration à la Rino the theme in a somewhat tongue-in-cheek way: Here, musical themes and motifs from Italy and the Upper Swabia region (Biberach) are humorously presented woven into an indissoluble unity. The “Biberacher Kreismarsch”, the folk song “On the Swabian Railway” and – on the Italian side – the songs “Funiculì, Funiculà”, “O sole mio” and the Italian national anthem will be played.
