The forerunner of the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) Tokyo Band was established in 1952 as the band of the Maritime Safety Agency. The Agency underwent organizational transition to the Maritime Self-Defense Force in 1954, and the band was reorganized into the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force Tokyo Band (JMSDF) in 1956. Following the transition of the Defense Agency to the Ministry of Defense in 2007, the band came under the direct command of the Defense Minister. As the central band of the Maritime Self-Defense Force, the Tokyo Band has performed for various important occasions including Imperial Wedding Parades, Olympic Games, World Athletic Championships, World Expositions and The National Celebration for the 20th Anniversary of His Majesty The Emperor’s Accession to the Throne. The band was invited to perform on the occasion of the centennial of Japanese Immigration (San Francisco, 1969), the bicentennial of the independence of the United States (Guam, 1976), the tri-centennial of the Russian Navy (Vladivostok, 1996), and for the International Fleet Review in Korea (Busan, 1998). Each year members travel in Maritime Self-Defense Force Training Squadrons to ports all over the world to contribute as international musical ambassadors. In addition to its annual concert, the JMSDF actively tours in Japan, attends band festivals including Kyo-En, and holds numerous recording sessions each year. In 2010, the band participated in the 24th Suntory Hall Anniversary Gala Concert along with various internationally renowned musicians and groups.
