The Military Band of the Salzburg Military Command maintains the tradition of the regimental band of the Imperial and Royal Infantry Regiment Archduke Rainer No. 59. It was newly established in fall 1956 in the Rainer Barracks in Salzburg. Its parent unit at that time was Rifle Battalion 29. The first director of music was Colonel Leo Ertl, who was later appointed head of the Music Division of the Ministry of Defense. In spring of 1958 the band appeared for the first time at the popular Mirabell Gardens concerts and executed a demanding musical program for an international audience. The achievements of the Military Band, which is mainly devoting its efforts to the performance of compositions of Austrian composers on the one hand and to playing original works for wind band on the other, were recognized by invitations to representative band events in Germany, Italy, Poland, in the Czech Republic and in Switzerland. The performance of the “Salzburg Torchlight Procession” featuring works by Michael Haydn, W.A. Mozart and Leopold Mozart during the festive opening ceremony of the Salzburg Festival has become the apogee of the annual schedule of the Salzburg Military Band. In 1975 Colonel Ertl retired both as Principal Director of Music of the Austrian Federal Army and in his capacity as Leader and Commander of the Salzburg Military Band. His successor was Colonel Josef Spirk who strongly emphasized the development of tattoos and the participating of the band in such events without neglecting the musical demands. In March 1995 Colonel Spirk was appointed head of the Music Division of the Federal Austrian Army and thus was able to place at the disposal of the entire Austrian military band service his expert knowledge and organizational skill. At the same time Captain Hannes Apfolterer was appointed Leader of the Military Band of Salzburg. Effective December 1, 2000 Major Ernst Herzog became Leader and Commander of the Military Band of the Salzburg Military command. He continues the tradition of this band in a consequent manner and in addition to numerous concert performances, emphasizes music played at military pageants and participating in cultural events of the state of Salzburg.
