Commissioned by the Twin Ports Wind Orchestra of Duluth, Minnesota, this work honors the life and legacy of one if its own members, James Stellmaker, who enjoyed a long and distinguished career as a public school music educator in Duluth. In contrast to a typical elegy, Twin Ports Overture has a celebratory feel, sparkling and colorful. Brass is prominent in many parts of the work, especially featuring Mr. Stellmaker's instrument, the trombone. The well-known hymn “Praise Ye the Lord, The Almighty,” which was played at his memorial service, is featured prominently throughout the work.
