Russian Tales tells the love story of a young couple of Russian peasants during the war. The suite opens with the “Danza delle Spose” (“Dance of the Brides”), a glimpse on a country feast where the main characters engage in a twirling group dance. Soon, however, happiness succumbs to sadness, when the young bridegroom must leave the village on the “Treno degli Addii” (“The Farewell Train”) and go to the battlefront: the bride intones a heartbreaking and melancholic melody that only the rhythmic pace of the train dares to interrupt. Finally, with the end of winter, the war also ends and the beloved returns home greeted by a sparkling “Danza della Primavera” (“Spring Dance”).
