Info

František Kovářík was born on June 26, 1858 in the vicinity of Prague, in a small place called Čelákovice. In the music of the Hungarian Infantry Regiment Great Prince Michael of Russia No. 26 he played both violin and clarinet under the baton of Military Band Director Karel Černý. In 1883 he founded a school of music and his own band in Čelákovice. In 1885 Kovářík moved to Prague, where he became director of the Imperial and Royal Privileged Civil Corps of Sharpshooters. On the basis of a recommendation pronounced by his doctor he emigrated to the United States of America. There he became director of a music school for singing. However, his nostalgia made him return to Prague. In the Bohemian capital he took over the band of the Imperial and Royal Privileged Civil Corps of Grenadiers. As Kovářík stressed discipline and orderliness in this organization, he succeeded in achieving a high level of artistry with the band. Therefore, in the years immediately prior to World War I it was regarded as one of the finest groups. Another important aspect of Kovářík’s personality becomes apparent in his social efforts: he had been a fervent advocate for the sake of Czech musicians. In addition to that he was cofounder of the Czech Bandmaster’s Union and later became president of the OSA (the Czech performing rights society). Already upon returning from the United States of America, Kovářík tinkered with the idea to make his works accessible also to rural bands at a lower rate. František Kovářík passed away in Čelákovice on July 10, 1936.

Okolo Vyšehradu
Marsch - March - Marche
