Info

„Tango Surprise“ is based on a true story: Many years ago, a promising trumpeter lived in Vienna. Nobody really was astonished about his incredible playing, as Vienna, on the one hand, is the city of music, and on the other he was born into a talented family, as both father and mother as well as all of his brothers and sisters were fine musicians. The young trumpeter was not satisfied with himself and always wanted to demonstrate that he was superior to his entire family. He did not only practice before the rehearsals, but also during the intermissions. In addition, it must not be emphasized that he needed a long time to warm up prior to concerts. However, this did not suffice, as he always would play many ornaments of his part during rehearsals and in concerts, and he would often also play the part of his neighbor. Finally the last note of a piece simply had to be played one octave higher than it was written. The conductors and his colleagues were annoyed about such a behavior, but nobody wanted to dismiss him due to his family background. But enough’s enough and one day his trumpet was taken away from him and he was given a cuckoo whistle instead, as this instrument was definitely not to produce any “nonsense”. It soon became evident that this idea was a gross error: On the occasion of a concert in the beautiful Vienna Woods, when a beautiful romantic overture was programmed, he clearly proved what you can do with a cuckoo whistle. When you listen to the “Tango Surprise”, you will easily understand his escapades on that “instrument”. It now was beyond discussion that the young trumpeter did not yet possess the maturity required for the position he occupied, and he was made to leave the orchestra – though “thrown out” would have been the more precise term in this instance. He later emigrated to Canada, married a competent woman, and eventually became solo trumpeter in one of the most renowned orchestras worldwide… Should he feel to demonstrate his abilities from time to time now, his wife will show up immediately… and she only plays a short tune on the cuckoo whistle…
