In June 1951, the Central Band started with 47 members selected nationwide as a band for the National Police Reserve, the antecedent to the present Japan Ground Self Defense Force (GSDF). Having undergone many changes since then, the Central Band with its 113 members is now making performance activities throughout the country as the main representative wind orchestra of Japan. The Band, as the military band under the direct control of the Minister of Defense frequently takes part in national functions, which includes performance welcoming national guests to the Guest House. The Central Band plays an important role in the success of official functions, such as musical performances for the enthronement ceremony of the incumbent Emperor, the wedding parade for the Crown Prince, the former Emperor’s and Empress’ funeral, the brilliant fanfare for the Olympic Games those were held in Tokyo, Sapporo, and Nagano, the FIFA World Cup that was cosponsored by both Japan and Korea, and the international Expo. In 2002, the Central Band participated in the international tattoo held in Korea to win popularity from the local nationals. This is its first overseas performance for the band. In addition, the Central Band participates in various musical activities, such as regular concerts conducted in the Metropolitan area three times a year, chamber music concerts, promenade concerts in the area of office buildings, and concert tours all over the country. The Central Band also does CD recordings and finally, it has an education department where musical knowledge and skills are imparted to GSDF band members.
