The Police Band of Baden-Württemberg has a long tradition, as there already was a police band in Stuttgart around the turn of the century. After its disbandment in World War I and later in World War II, it was the first such organization to be re-established in Germany after the war. The date effective was October 1945, and the director then was Obermusikmeister (Senior Director of Music) Walter Kiesow. Until 2000 the band was stationed in Stuttgart, the state capital, and was designated “Stuttgart Police Band” up to 1981. On April 15, 2000, it became subordinate to the Directorate of the Baden-Württemberg Mobile Police Force. Since May 2000 the 36 musicians of the band are stationed in the police compound of the 5th Police Bn, Baden-Württemberg Mobile Police Force, in Böblingen. There the necessary infrastructure to meet the professional requirements for conducting rehearsals etc. will be made available too. The director of the band, André C. Waltemate and his assistant Toni Scholl are responsible for the high standards of performance and the respective public relations efforts. The comprehensive repertory of the band encompasses almost all styles of music performed by a contemporary wind band: It spans from symphonic wind music, transcriptions of masterworks by the great masters, arrangements of swing, pop and rock music to the traditional march and Bohemian (folk) music. It must not be emphasized that the Police Band of Baden-Württemberg does not only present the wide span of its repertory on the occasion of its numerous concerts of high musical caliber, it also is in the eye of the public when carrying out the official ceremonial functions for the state government. Other activities to testify to its artistic quality are radio and studio productions.
