Marches in general are parts of public life for a very long time. Even the big composers could not resist the fascination of this genre. Marches were written for differenc occasions. Some of them have been more or less forgotten, others became very famous.
In 1822, Franz Schubert wrote three military marches - however they were not composed for military bands but for two pianos. The floating melodic lines, snappy calls and colorful harmonics of "Military March No. 1" are good reasons to create a modern transcription for wind band.
