"Concert Prologue" was commissioned by music publisher Rundel with the aim of creating a sight-reading competition piece. In terms of difficulty, this work is intended for Grade 4 wind orchestras. Demands are placed on all registers (woodwinds as well as brass), ranging from demanding, dynamic, differentiated music-making to chamber music-like interpretive transparency. At the beginning of the introduction, the conductor should focus on a homogeneous sound, on well-tuned trumpets and trombones, on the balance of the entire brass section and, above all, avoid too great an increase. After the introductory fanfare, an interplay between lyrical and signal-like episodes begins as a contrast, whereby a climax with the main idea should only be aimed for at the end of this section. In the following Andantino, the woodwinds and other solo instruments can unfold their musical qualities. The conductor should strive for chamber music transparency in the sense of simplicity and make sure that this character is not blurred when the percussion begins at figure 9. The rhythmic structure is to be effectively integrated here as a musical effect. In the recapitulation, attention should be paid to the necessary elasticity and increase, but excessive dynamic forcing of the tones, especially in the brass, should be avoided.
