Jan Hendrik Rübel was born in Hamburg in 1970. He initially studied in his native city under Prof. Mehlhorn before continuing his studies in Berlin with Prof. Boettcher, under whom he was awarded a Diploma with distinction. He subsequently joined the soloist class under Prof. Demenga in Basel, where he took his final concert examination in 1998, again passing with distinction. Jan Hendrik Rübel has been a prize-winner and scholarship recipient at the German Federal Music Competition “Jugend musiziert”, the Elise Meyer Competition, the Summer Academy and with the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). As a chamber musician he has been a guest of the Steans Institute at the Ravinia Festival in Chicago and the Salzburg and Lucerne Festivals. Jan Hendrik Rübel gained orchestral experience in the German Federal Youth Orchestra, as a deputy at the Zurich Opera, and with the Berlin Philharmonic. He has given solo performances with the Mozarteum Orchestra Salzburg, the Basel Symphony Orchestra and, under Ingo Metzmacher, with the Hamburg Philharmonic State Orchestra, where he worked as deputy solo cellist from 1998 until 2002. In 2002 Jan Hendrik Rübel accepted the same position at the NDR Radio Philharmonic in Hanover.
