As a musical ambassador of the German Federal Armed Forces, the band that is stationed in Ulm the metropolis on the Danube, has been thrilling its audiences for more than half a century. At the same time, it also represents the Federal Republic at numerous events abroad. Its fifty musicians of the symphonic wind orchestra, all of them with academic training strive to entertain their public with their virtuosity, the sonority of the band and their professional appearance, and they want to arouse the curiosity of their audiences in the multifaceted qualities of this organization. Established in 1956, the band was subordinate to HQ 10th Tank Division for years when it became assigned to the Joint Support Service in 2013. Since that time, it performs under the designation “German Army Band Ulm”. Its musical director and leader has been Lieutenant Colonel Matthias Prock as of January 2012.

For more than 130 commitments during one year, it is one of the core tasks of this musical unit to provide music for military events and ceremonies, e.g. muster parades, serenades or the ceremony of beating retreat as well as troop entertainment or missions abroad. Another main effort are charity concerts both in concert halls and in open air. Alone during the past 25 years, the band collected some € 1.5 million for such purposes. The band’s wide range of tasks is rounded by music shows where the choreographies are rehearsed and then presented on marches and light music. In addition, there also are appearances of the chamber music ensembles in varying instrumentation or in the setting of Czech-style groups.

At the same time it goes without saying that it always has been a distinctive mission to foster the traditional march while it also concentrates new works of original symphonic wind music. Together with transcriptions of classical works, contemporary light music as well as pieces for big band this makes for a varied program of interest of which the public may always assure itself. To guarantee this German Army Band Ulm is traveling all over southern Germany: The busses of the band therefore are well known from the Lake of Constance, the Breisgau to the Bavarian Forest. However, travels abroad frequently show up on the band’s itinerary, and this means that the band has appeared on almost all continents.

Among the highlights in the band’s history there are numerous recordings of CDs and television appearances, mutual concerts with such groups like the Philharmonic Orchestra of the City of Ulm or the renowned choir “Ulmer Spatzen”, massed band concerts with other domestic or foreign wind bands and regular participations in internationally famous band music shows.
