La première symphonie de Johan de Meij The Lord of the Rings [Le Seigneur des Anneaux] est basée sur la trilogie romanesque du même nom de J.R.R. Tolkien. Depuis leur parution en 1955, ces livres ont fasciné des millions de lecteurs dans le monde entier. La symphonie est composée de cinq mouvements séparés illustrant chacun un personnage ou un épisode important de ce grand succès littéraire.
La troisième partie décrit la monstre Gollum, une créature visqueuse et farouche, suggéré par le saxophone soprano. Il murmure et parle tout seul, siffle, zézaye, gémit et ricane, il est tantôt misérable, tantôt venimeux, toujours en fuite et toujours à la recherche de son bien le plus précieux, l’Anneau.
