World premieres always present a unique moment, both for the composer and for the performing musicians and of course for the audience. When a composition is heard publicly for the first time, it has a special charm. The Stadtkapelle Wangen and its conductor Tobias Zinser performed a very special work for the first time in Europe at their spring concert on March 24, 2018. The US-American composer James Barnes has written a solo concerto for flute and wind band, his "Concerto for Flute" op. 137. For this virtuoso three-movement work, the Stadtkapelle Wangen was able to win the flutist Richard Nolte as soloist. He is a flute teacher at the Jugendmusikschule Württembergisches Allgäu, co-founder of the Ensemble Encasa and has worked for formations such as the NDR Sinfonieorchester Hamburg, the Ensemble Modern, the Kammerphilharmonie Bodensee-Oberschwaben, the Südwestdeutsche Philharmonie Konstanz and others.

The contact of the Stadtkapelle Wangen to the composer James Barnes has existed for years and came about through the music publisher RUNDEL. Among other things, these compounds led to a large commissioned composition, the "Eighth Symphony (Symphony for Wangen)" op. 148 by James Barnes, which was premiered by the Stadtkapelle Wangen in 2015 at the celebration of the 1200th anniversary of the city of Wangen, conducted by the composer himself.

"It is a great pleasure and honor for us to perform the remarkable flute concerto by James Barnes exclusively," says Tobias Zinser. "Of course, this is only possible because with Richard Nolte we have found an outstanding flutist who is equal to the technical challenges of this work." That Barnes' flute concerto is extremely demanding for the soloist is also confirmed by Richard Nolte. "Every movement has its own characteristics. The first Spanish 'Allegro' in Bolero style requires absolute rhythmic precision. The fast third movement 'Rondo' is highly virtuosic, the fast runs have to be played crystal clear. And the second slow movement 'The Deadly Butterfly' has a calm, meditative tone and in my eyes has an absolute special position. "Richard Nolte is thrilled that the second movement for alto flute has been conceived as a solo instrument - something that has been written in the flute literature is so far unique. "In combination with the other two movements, this part is absolutely logical and a sort of haven of peace - a less technical challenge for the soloist than a sonic one." This second movement was also the crucial point for Richard Nolte, the request of Tobias Zinser accept. "The whole flute concert is really great and very challenging. But I was particularly pleased that the alto flute is used here as a solo instrument. "In general, Richard Nolte is very impressed by the composition. "You can tell that James Barnes has a tremendous amount of knowledge about the different instruments. The interplay with the orchestra is excellently composed, so that the flute never sets in the orchestral sound of the other wind instruments. Despite the virtuosity, the work remains easy to understand and enjoyable for the listener. I truly hope that this unique work, which represents a brilliant cross-over between classical design and modern timbres and elements, will find its place in the professional and semi-professional music world. It has always earned the recognition. "
