From May 01, 1896 until his tragic early death, Karl Komzák was exclusively active as director of the spa orchestra in Baden. Only a few invitations to foreign countries interrupted this period. The ambitious cultural, musical and social life in that fashionable spa offered Komzák a platform for versatile musical and artistic activities. Most of the compositions that may be dated pack to that era, were premiered by Komzák’s Baden orchestra and according to period press reports welcomed by the numerous audience with almost frenetic applause. It should be evident that his opus 279, the “Andreas-Hofer-Marsch” (March “Andreas Hofer”) was highly estimated by the regiments of the Tyrolean Imperial Rifles on account of the use of “Song of Andreas Hofer” (words be Julius Mosen with music by Leopold Knebelsberger), and even more so, as it was assigned to the 3rd Regiment of the Tyrolean Imperial Rifles as regimental quick march. When the assignment became effective, the regimental band was conducted by Rudolf Achleitner, a bandmaster who is well known and appreciated even today.
