James Barnes dedicated "Alvamar Overture" to Robert Hollowell and the 1981 Wichita Public Schools Jr. High Honor Band.
"Alvamar Overture" is a wonderful piece for bands playing at grade 6. The syncopated rhythm of the beginning shows a positive and forwardly attitude, which is encouraged by a rising melody with dotted rhythm and triplets.
Festive chords, sounding like bells, lead over to the middle part adagio, sounding very noble with its graceful and broadly phrased melodies. In the end "Alvamar Overture" turns back to the joyful sounds of the beginning and concludes with a bright finale.
