The first performance and the first concert experience together on stage: for this special moment, the Dutch composer Kees Vlak wrote a small concerto. It consists of five equally small pieces.
1. Fanfare
The opening part contains only four different notes. The different parts imitate each other again and again.
2. Morning Prayer
The Day begins with a musical morning prayer. The pastor leads the prayers and the congregation answers. Every once in a while you can hear the church bells ring.
3. Cuckoo-Tree
The third part is a small waltz. There is not only one cuckoo, it’s a whole tree full of cuckoos and one is singing after the other, the first cuckoo begins, one beat later the second cuckoo joins in and one beat later the bass cuckoo sings along. Someone is knocking at the bark of the tree! A guest, maybe a woodpecker?
4. Carillon
Bim Bam, Bim Bam! A carillon (big chimes) is normaly installed in a clock tower and you play the large keys using your fists. It does not have a soft pedal like a piano, so sometimes the sound can be very blurry.
5. Little Parade
The “Young Concert Collection” ends with a festive march in review, a “Little Parade”. You can hear fanfares again, like in the first movement. This is a really modern march and each phrase ends with syncopation, a note that cannot wait and always sounds a little too early.
