William Byrd hat gemeinsam mit seinem Lehrer Thomas Tallis das Grundprinzip des klassischen Renaissance-Polyphonie, den imitierenden Satz, in England heimisch gemacht. Sein umfangreiches geistliches Vokalwerk zählt zum Bedeutendsten, was die Epoche hinterlassen hat. Als Komponist von Instrumentalmusik hat er einen wesentlichen Beitrag zur Entwicklung einer eigenständigen Musik für Tasteninstrumente geleistet. Das üblicherweise in sehr nüchterner Sprache gehaltene Verwaltungsbuch "Chapel Royal" bezeichnete den Komponisten beim Eintrag seines Todesdatums als "A Father of Musicke".
