Giuseppe Verdi was the composer of titanic greatness in the world of the nineteenth-century Italian opera. From Rossini, Bellini and Donizetti he inherited the tradition of the glorious vocal melody to which he added a sense of drama what has never been excelled. The element, so to speak, that binds all of his operas is his creative power, to write soaring, memorable melodies. Though rooted in the voice, they retain their character and emotional impact even in orchestral settings. It was during the late 19th and early 20th century that the band made the music of Verdi known worldwide – in adaptations for wind orchestra. It is almost incredible that for many people, at the beginning of the 21st century, it is the wind orchestra again that brings about the first contact with the great works of Verdi in environment dominated by commercial music.
