UNIVERSAL FANFARE is an ambiguous title. On the one hand “universal“ means “versatile“, on the other hand it relates to the endless universe. The beginning of the fanfare sounds like the theme of a science fiction serial, with a timpani solo and “space-like“ interjections alternating between high and low instruments. Horns and bass instruments provide a basis for the bright main motif in the high brass. The rhythm of the timpani solo is repeated, this time by high woodwinds and brass. We hear the brilliant main theme played by horns and baritones and the sound builds up to the lyrical middle section. This hymn is very cantabile and contrasts with the bright sounds of the beginning. Finally we hear the “universe theme“ again in a shining grandioso finale - like a vast number of stars in the night sky.
