Info

The "Little Magyar" begins passionately with a melancholy motif in the minor mode: a campfire is burning; the violins weep and tell stories of the fatherland and the family. This joyless mood does not prevail for long, as the Hungarian is no sad personality by nature. Soon the primas (the first violin player) comes to the fore, his play becomes fiery and happier – a rousing csardas is played. Spurred by the musicians, the dance of the men and women around the campfire becomes wilder and wilder and they begin to sing to the sound of their small ensemble. And grandma sits close by the fire and feels happy: this is her family, and her little grandson is already among the musicians playing like an adult virtuoso. The piece concludes with three traditional chords. The composer wants to express here that grandma is kissing her grandson – the little Magyar.
