Summer is the second in a series of symphonic poems, inspired by the seasons and the folk music of Scandinavia. In Spring, the composer made use of two Swedish folk tunes, whereas Summer incorporates Finnish folk music, his own musical impressions of the landscape and a quote from Jean Sibelius Symphony No. 1, resulting in a sonorous and inspiring tone poem.
