Lieutenant Colonel Shigeru Sugawara was born in Hokkaido in 1947. He began to play tuba when he was a student of junior high school. In 1967, he joined Japan Ground Self Defense Force Central Band as a tuba player and started his military career. He studied tuba under Mr. Kurahei Sato, Mr. Katsuhiko Kaijima, Instructor of Musashino Academia Musicae, Mr. Ikumitsu Tado, principal tuba player of NHK Symphony Orchestra. He holds a Bachelor of Music Degree from Musashino Academia Musicae in 1974. In 1983, he attended the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music to study conducting under Mr. Masahisa Endo. LTC Sugawara’s previous assignments include executive officer of 12th Division Band, commander of 7th Division Band, commander of Northeastern Army Band, commander of Eastern Army Band. He served as chief of performance division of Central Band before he was appointed to present position. LTC Sugawara is a member of Japanese Band Directors Association.
