Info

(Dámaso) Pérez Prado was born on December 11, 1916 in Matanzas, Cuba. He learned to play classical music on the piano from an early age. He later played organ and piano in local clubs. In the 1940s he worked mainly in Havana and belonged to the "Orquesta Casino de la Playa", in 1946 he founded his own band. In 1948 he moved to Mexico, where he spent most of his career. He specialized in mambo, a type of music that developed in Cuba after 1930. His track "(Que Rico) El Mambo" was released in the US in the spring of 1950 under the retitled "Mambo Jambo" and became a hit. That was reason for Pérez Prado to go on tour in the States. His first concerts in New York were all sold out and a veritable mambo hysteria developed. In the mid-1950s, the new "Mambo" dance also reached Europe, where it quickly became very popular and gave the Cuban-born Prado the international reputation as the new "King Of The Mambo".
