Since time immemorial, the ladybug (or "Ladybird") has been understood by humans as a creature that brings happiness and joy. We also appreciate its fine and light-footed appearance. The Dutch composer Kees Vlak used all these characteristics in his cheerful composition "Ladybirds" which presents a very special, seldom heard solo group: the flute trio.
After the main theme is presented in unison in bar 9, it appears in bar 36 in three full parts. The next section at bar 53 has something mysterious about it. Maybe he would like to tell us about the secret process of a black larva with red spines transforming into the ladybird we know?
After soloists and band are often in dialogue in the first part of the composition, they finally find each other from bar 97 onwards. Starting in bar 113
"poco più mosso" a renewed zest for life leads to a grandiose ending.
Let yourself be enchanted by our Ladybirds!
BASIC SOUND
From S to XXL – Music for any band instrumentation
"Basic Sound" is a series by RUNDEL Music Publications offering an attractive and diversified repertoire to bands at grade 2 or 3 level, of sizes S to XXL. "Basic Sound" allows for performances by groups with limited instrumentation. Minimun requirements are clearly bracketed in the score.
The smallest size (S) of "Basic Sound" is based on the following instruments:
one (1) flute, two (2) clarinets, one (1) alto-saxophone, two (2) trumpets, one (1) trombone, one (1) baritone/euphonium, one (1) tuba and percussion.
Each edition also includes a full set of parts (XXL). That way the conductor can adjust the pieces of the "Basic Sound" series to his band's instrumentation.
