Info

Harmen Cnossen was born in Sneek, the Netherlands, in 1965.
At the age of seven, he received his first piano and percussion lessons. In 1984 he was admitted to the Sweelinck Conservatory in Amsterdam to study both instruments.
During his college years, he played in the European Youth Orchestra led by the conductors Abbado, Haitink and Von Karajan.
In addition, he attended classes in ‘old music’ in Weimar and Utrecht. In 1992 he joined the Herbert von Karajan Akademie in Berlin as a timpanist. Here, he played in the Berliner Philharmoniker under conductors such as Barenboim, Levine and Mehta. After his studies, he subsequently became assistant‐conductor of the Flemish Opera, conductor of the Tchaikovsky Chamber Orchestra of Belgium, and of the Coro e Orchestra di G. Verdi. At the Lovro Von Matacic Competition for young conductors, he won a gold medal in 1995.
At the invitation of the Chinese government, he lived in China for six years, working with orchestras such as the China National Symphony Orchestra of Beijing. After having won the Hong Kong Philharmonic Fellowship Award in 2005, he was appointed Resident Conductor of the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra. In that capacity he worked together with chief conductor Edo de Waart.
After his return to Europe, he was appointed conductor and artistic leader of the Marine Band of the Royal Netherlands Navy on 2 March 2009. Since his appointment, the band has given many successful performances throughout the Netherlands; one of the highlights was the great opening production of the Hermitage Amsterdam, which was broadcast live on television, in the presence of the Dutch Queen Beatrix and the Russian president Medvedev. Also very special was the trip to America for the musical enhancement of the festivities, surrounding the 400th anniversary of New York.
In a TV special in March 2010, Major H. Cnossen presented his band to the public in all its versatility.
