In all of Brahms’ music, the singable main theme immediately appeals to people. I comes from inside and is the direct expression of the composer’s personality. In a letter to Clara Schumann he revealed his entire persofnality in one sentence: “The truthful man is quiet in elation, and quiet in pain. Passions are to go away soon or they have to be chased away”. This basic attitude of Johannes Brahms may also be found in the song “Lullaby and Good Night”, which he found in the collection of poems “Des Knaben Wunderhorn” (“The Boy's Magic Horn”), and which he set to music in 1868. Its heartfelt simplicity soon made it become a true folksong.
Pavel Stanék adapted the song with much empathy to contemporary reception of music and created a wonderful and touching piece for concert band.
