Gustav Holst entstammte einer Familie skandinavisch-deutscher Herkunft, die sich in Riga niedergelassen hatte, ehe sein Urgroßvater Matthias zu Beginn des 19. Jahrhunderts nach England übersiedelte. Der Enkel strebte zunächst eine Pianistenkarriere an, doch ein Nervenleiden im rechten Arm beendete dieses Vorhaben. Nach kurzem Studium des Kontrapunkts in Oxford kam Holst 1893 ans Royal College of Music nach London. Sein Lehrer charakterisierte ihn (wie seine Tochter Imogen später berichtete) als "harten Arbeiter, aber ohne jede Brillanz". Mitstudent zu dieser Zeit war Ralph Vaughan Williams, dessen Interesse für das englische Volkslied Holst teilte. Neben der Komposition studierte Holst die Posaune und spielte in verschiedenen Orchestern, darunter auch Unterhaltungsensembles (White Viennes Band). In den ersten beiden Jahrzehnten des 20. Jahrhunderts schuf er sich in England einen großen Ruf als Pädagoge. Mit seiner Methode des "Learning by doing" reformierte er die englische Musikerziehung von Grunde auf und beinflusste Komponisten wie Britten und Peter Maxwell Davies. 1925 gab Gustav Holst seine Lehrtätigkeit auf und widmete sein letztes Lebensjahrzehnt dem Komponieren.
