Gabriel Fauré (1845 – 1924) war Organist, Kapellmeister und Kompositionslehrer am Pariser Conservatoire. Er gilt harmonisch als Vorläufer des französischen Impressionismus und erhielt auch den Beinamen „französischer Schumann“. Durch seine Schüler, zu denen u. a. Charles Koechlin, Florent Schmitt und Maurice Ravel zählten, gewann er Einfluss auf die Entwicklung der neueren französischen Musik.
