Kurt Gaeble wrote “Freiheit” (Freedom) in 2009; the piece refers to the historical events of the Tyrolean struggle for freedom in 1809 and the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989. The massive main theme, introduced in the beginning, is varied in rhythm, tone color and style. The predominant element of difficulty for all of the variations surely is rhythm. Kurt Gaeble explains this fact with the following thoughts: “Actually, it is like in real life. Nowadays, handling our freedom is not so easy. Life’s pace is so fast that it makes me lose my rhythm. I have to live consciously and be on guard to distinguish between what is important and what is not. And I have to focus on things that stabilize my life. Otherwise my so called freedom might turn into dangerous dependence and loss of my identity”. Finally the composer refers to a quote by cabaret artist and actor Werner Fink: “Freedom is just like health: You never know what you have until you lose it.”
