This overture is based on the spiritual "The angel rolled the stone away". In the slow introduction fragments of the theme can be heard. The fast section which follows displays the theme, alternated with a rock-rythm pattern background. The middle section of this overture is a solemn choral; composed in a free conception with only a few points of support drawn from the original thematic material. In the fast finale a fragment of another spiritual - When the Saints go marchin' in - is shortly brought out.
