Markus Götz was born in Schopfheim in 1973. As a child he received trumpet lessons and played in various bands and orchestral ensembles. In Freiburg (Breisgau) he studied Musicology, History and Philosophy. In addition, he perfected and expanded his trumpet-playing abilities at the School of Jazz and Rock in Freiburg. His teacher there was the well-known jazz trumpeter Gary Barone. Lessons in arrangement with Bernhard G.Hoffmann and in composition with Jacob de Haan, Stephen Melillo, James Barnes, among others, introduced him to the specific sound problems and expressive possibilities of the symphonic wind ensemble.
He is working as a teacher for history and music in Riehen (Switzerland) and as a trumpet teacher at the music school Mittleres Wiesental. He proofs his educational quality by a diversified list of projects: Markus Götz conducts bands and choirs, coaches jazz bands and lead improvisation workshops. He often manages big musical projexts like "Piraten, Piraten", "Johannes - die Stimme aus der Wüste" or "Canterville".
Even as a student Götz began to give shape to his musical ideas in his own compositions. His first composition, a "Festive March", was first performed by the Fahrnau Youth Wind Ensemble, and his "Capriccio" for trumpet and piano was published when he was only 18. As a composer for wind band he received several awards. The productive cooperation with Musikverlag RUNDEL results in a number of compositions and arrangements for all grades. Markus Götz’ musical language is colourful and iridescent. A full-bodied sound and a sure hand in the employment of formal structures demonstrate his astonishing musicality. His work remains rooted in traditional forms; he explores the possibilities of an expanded tonality in order to create a high level of expressiveness and artistic panoramas of sound.
Beside wind band and musical, Markus Götz' passion is jazz music. That's why he performs as a musician with his own jazz quartet or as a guest of other jazz bands.
