Info

Karl Maurer was a musician, composer, and orchestral director who was active primarily in the state of Baden-Wuerttemberg, and he therefore is still well known there today. His musical career and activities in the band community are typical and absolutely comparable for many people of his generation. Karl Maurer studied at the Wiesbaden academy of music and then at the conservatory of that city before moving on to Dortmund. After graduation he joined the band service of the German Luftwaffe. Due to the modernization efforts implemented by Prof. Hans Felix Husadel, the Chief of the Band Service for the Luftwaffe, the bands of the Luftwaffe boasted the most modern instrumentation among all bands of the German services. After World War 2 he was trombone player with the (municipal) fashionable spa orchestras of Badenweiler and Bad Mergentheim. Later he performed as trombonist with the Swabian Symphony Orchestra, which today is known as Wuerttemberg Philharmonic Reutlingen (WPR). In addition, he was also active in the folk-like band scene as trombone player and member of the “Swabian Musicians”. This period resulted in a number of radio and TV appearances, and also many LPs and CDs. On behalf of the city of Bad Urach he organized a youth orchestra and became its first director. This orchestra achieved a remarkable level under his baton and became known in the entire region. He furthermore toured both at home and abroad with his wind band. Maurer was eventually appointed as “municipal music director” in Bad Urach, and retired from this position in 1987. Apart from his activities in Bad Urach he also conducted the Dettingen on the Erms Music Association for 23 years and that of Neuhausen on the Erms for 29 years. His musical legacy as a composer comprises a number of pieces for wind band.
