Funk as a musical genre dominated by rhythm perfectly suits the concert band. Markus Goetz used the big band groove of the 1970’s in the new style of “Groove Academy” with cool, driving bass lines and many liberties for the drum section. Different sections alternately playing the bass lines create a great effect, e.g. first tuba and electric bass, later bass clarinet and baritone saxophone. The soloists (trumpet and tenor saxophone) can play the solo parts as indicated or improvise on the Bb blues scale. Solos can also be taken by other instruments. The conductor may also decide to thin out the backup to bring out the soloists.
