Info

The Frenchman Félix-Alexandre Guilmant (1837-1911) was one of the most distinguished organists of the 19th century. Through his compositions, his dazzling organ concerts and above all through his pedagogical work (e.g. editions of organ music by old masters), he had an influence on the musical life of France and the USA that is hardly imaginable by today's standards. Of course, the focus of his compositional work is organ and church music in the most diverse forms, along with some chamber music “rarities”.

The new sacred lyrics for Handel’s melody arose in the early 19th century: “Tochter Zion, freue dich!” (See, the conqu'ring hero comes!) It became one of the most famous German Christmas songs. In 1904, French organist and composer Félix Alexandre Guilmant used this melody for a romantic organ piece – gradually building in a comprehensible way for the listener. In the middle of the piece we hear a two-part Fugato passage, before it impressively ends with a Grandioso. Albert Loritz, who already took notice of the special piece...
