For this sweeping opening piece in the RUNDEL Series eXplora, Austrian composer Thomas Asanger chose the title “Break-Up”. In the context of the composition, this expression describes the break-up of old, obsolete structures and planning for a new beginning. In German language, the translation for break-up “Aufbruch” can have both meanings: breaking something up and leaving for something new. Asanger’s big inspiration was the remarkable spirit of optimism in the band music world. The younger generation is very enthusiastic about band music, breathing new life into the scene. Literature for winds has also changed much in the past 20 years, combining traditional and modern elements. There are many new and exciting pieces, especially for young bands. This is evident in the composition contest of the Österreichische Blasmusikjugend (The Austrian Wind Band Youth) designed to enhance the repertoire of original works for young bands. Thomas Asanger won the contest in the category BJ (easy to medium difficulty) with “Break-Up”, describing youthful enthusiasm for band music and the optimistic spirit of a new generation. He dedicates the light-hearted composition to the youth band of his hometown Perg.
